Mold melted glass sculpture is a relatively new glassmaking technique. The process is similar to that of creating a sculpture. First a model is made from clay, followed by preparation of a special mold, which is unique for every piece, whether small or monumental in scale. With this technique it is possible to use a countless number of glass colors or color combinations. It is also possible to work with the transparency of the glass or with its internal structure. Glass in the mold is melted in a furnace at high temperatures and is then slowly cooled in an anealing oven for anywhere from several days to months, depending on the size of the glass sculpture. The sculpture is then finished by grinding, sanding and finally polishing.
